Match Report: The 2015 instalment of the Weir Cup match was kindly hosted by Portmarnock Golf Club on Sunday 8th March. The match was once again a 36-hole event, with DUGS hosting lunch. Foursomes scratch match-play was the format for both rounds giving the students some match practice ahead of their annual Colours fixture. In an attempt to reverse a run of defeats in the fixture, the DUGS Match Captain opted for the radical. He gambled on youth, fielding possibly the freshest DUGS team of a generation (in this regard and to the eternal credit of Philip Halpenny, the lunchtime consensus was that what he lacked in youthful appearance, he more compensated for in spirit!). DUGS took a slender lead into the traditional Portmarnock style lunch which was as excellent, as it was liquid. DUGS President Gavin Caldwell kindly joined, noting in his speech the great attitude and spirit evident within DUGC. It may have been that the DUGS match-captain hadn’t communicated with sufficient clarity that the fixture was a 36 hole event, which led to an over indulgent lunch, but for whatever the reason, bar one notable exception DUGS did not show up for golf in the afternoon. Alas, DUGC came storming home, to snatch victory by the smallest of margins, the 2nd year in a row where a point was all that separated the teams. Overall, a most enjoyable day. Competitive golf, in the right spirit, with excellent company, in the best of surrounds. The relationship between DUGS and DUGC remains in a good place.
