Portmarnock Golf Club

Manager: Philip Halpenny

Format: 12 man team, foursomes.

Result: DUGS 8 - RCD 4

Match Report:

A wet, windy and cold day in April saw us welcome Royal Co Down GC to Portmarnock for our biennial fixture.

Despite the bitter conditions the spoils were shared in the morning with the teams going into lunch 3 points a-piece. The morning highlight was Paddy Spicer's hole-in-one at the 15th - the shortest par 5 in golf, according to Ben Crenshaw when winning the Irish Open in 1976.

In view of the conditions it was wisely decided to play foursomes again in the afternoon, instead of the traditional fourball. The weather improved as the afternoon progressed but the course took its toll on the visitors with DUGS forging ahead to regain the Myerscough-McKeever Shield.

The Club produced a marvellous meal for our Black-Tie dinner in the Pickeman Room.

DUGS presented their Match Manager Brian Gibson with a framed print of an Irish Field article from 1936 praising the work of Harry Colt on the Newcastle links anticipating that "it would soon become one of the best courses in the country".
