Match report from our match against Queens
Match held Sat 20th Sept
Carton House
Despite heavy rain the night before the sun shone on the day, and a lovely game of golf was had.
Match 1: Karen O’Kelly (20 & Louella Morton (9) v Joanne Stuart (13) & Anne Wynne (22.8)
Result: QUGS 3 up
QUGS set a high bar from the very start. Anne played a blinder on the front nine, sinking a couple of 20ft putts and getting multiple pars. She had a shot on all bar two holes, so DUGS had to dig deep to stay in the running. Louella sank a long downhill putt on the 5th to half the hole and Karen pared the 7th, but at the end of the front nine, QUGS were 4 up. Thanks to a grip change, Karen played a stormer on the back nine, getting pars on the 10th, 13th and 17th, but Joanne was very solid and kept up the pressure, leading to a QUGS victory. Really enjoyable match in great company, where at one point Joanne was even cheering on DUGS!
Match 2: Nicky Cox (15) & Judith Whelan (8.9) vs Siobhan McHugh (14) Sara Hill (33) Match Result: DUGS +4
Nicky & I had a great day playing Siobhan and Sara QUGs in match 2. DUGS had a strong start helped by local knowledge and we found ourselves 3up through 9. We exchanged wins and losses through the back 9, halving the 18th to finish 4up. We had great company both on the course and over dinner.
Match 3: Sheena Bailey (16) & Mairéad Hughes (19) v Kathleen Calvert & (15) Cathy Bratty (25)
Match result QUGS 3up
QUGS ladies started strong leading 4up thru 7. DUGS pushed hard to win back holes, a tricky task against Cathy who couldn’t miss a putt!
5 down after the par 3 14th, DUGS fought hard to win the 15th and 16th holes. A lively match played in great spirits.
Match 4: Mo Flahive (24) & Deirdre Hoey (5) vs Trish Neily (17) & Maeve Toner (22). Match result QUGS 1up. Three halves to start set up a very friendly nip and tuck game where neither team ever went more than 1up. Mo had a fantastic par on the 4th to put DUGS ahead, but we were back to a/s on the 5th. DUGS were one down at the turn but a great approach from Mo at the 10th secured the win. We traded blows back and forth for the next 6 holes. A nice birdie from Deirdre at the 16th meant we were a/s with two to play. A super par from Maeve at 17 put QUGS one up. A half at 18 was the best DUGs could do against
Very solid opposition.
Match 5: Cathy Bryce (10) & Olivia Moore (14) vs Sara MCrea (17) & Laura McCausland (24). After 3 holes, 2 down and the higher handicappers outdriving us off the tee, we thought we were in for a long afternoon. We gritted our teeth and pulled out all the stops to get back to a/s on 8, thanks to a fine birdie from Cathy on 7 and a shot hole for Olivia on 8. Our resurgence was shortlived and we found ourselves 1 down at the turn. We won 10 and 14, lost 12 and the rest were halved. Standing on 18, with no shots being given, it was all to play for. DUGS had a brace of pars to win a very competitive game 1 up.
