Report – DUGS Captain’s Prize, Milltown GC, 13 July 2018
Matt Minch, DUGS Captain for 2018, hosted his Captain’s Prize on a beautifully sunny afternoon at Milltown Golf Club on Friday 13 July.
A large turn-out of 40 golfers pitted themselves against a course that was fast-running and well protected by some tricky pin placeents so it was no surprise when it was local stalwart, Paddy Spain, who claimed top honours with a magnificent score of 43 points, with best gross going to our most consistent DUG of the last couple of years, Fran Quilty. The full results were as follows:
• Winner : Paddy Spain, 43 points
• Best gross : Fran Quilty, 33 points
• Second : Martin Moroney, 41 points (on back nine)
• Third : Brian Tuite, 41 points
• Front 9 : Donald Hickey, 20 points
• Back 9 : Alan Wolfe, 22 points
After some welcome pre-prandial drinks on the sun-bathed balcony, 29 DUGS sat down to enjoy another sumptuous dinner from the Milltown kitchen, carefully masterminded by the ever-present head-waiter, Peter, and the head barman, Mark. Following a brief moment’s silence in memory of David Fleury, the Latin grace was delivered faultlessly and without notes by Fergus Duddy. The Captain was his usual debonair self in delivering a very entertaining after-dinner speech, including the extension of very special welcomes to his good friend, Clive Davis, who was visiting from Kenya, and to his son, Chris, playing in his first DUGS outing. Paddy Spain’s acceptance speech was acclaimed as the highlight of the evening, especially since it included no jokes that required censoring.
On a day of such fun and camaraderie, it was hardly surprising that a significant number of DUGS headed to the bar after dinner and, indeed, it was difficult to persuade the Captain that, at midnight, his day had, indeed, come to an end and that he was required to go home!!
