MATCH REPORT
It was great to resume this event at Rosslare GC after COVID cancelling the 2020 and 2021 events.
Wonderful weather, a course in its best condition for many years and the novelty of the first occasion playing the Cleek at the same venue as the Fanagan Trophy made for a memorable day.
The respective societies subsequently gathered together for dinner in the Club – a social experiment which worked out very well for those that attended.
Unfortunately the Cleek was lost, but at least UCDGS managed to turn up with an engraved Cleek!
I have had great pleasure in helping to organise this event since 2000 but, as time and tide waits for no man, one should progress to the next generation of DUGS.
I hope that future managers won’t look too closely at the finer detail of the results above when considering me for selection!

Match Report
Following our very successful inaugural match in August 2021 where DUGS won 5 holes up we decided to increase the number of matches from three to five and returned to Rosslare with a great level of excitement generated in the fixture.
We were delighted to have 5 new members of DUGS competing in the match day line-up, including Mary Anderson Senior who came down with her daughter to support the team.
Yet again we were lucky with the weather on the morning with both teams meeting before the first tee time for photos of the two teams and a joint team photo.
Patrick Spain on behalf of DUGS then announced the players as they teed off for their respective colleges.
Overall result DUGS Three Down
DUGS had an uphill battle on the day giving lots of shots in 4 of the 5 matches, with up to 20 shots given in the last two matches.
The only DUGS win on the day came in the first match lead out by newcomers to DUGS, both former DUHC first team players, Karen Jackson and Una Budd, the latter also an ex Irish international cricketer, and in spite of Karen giving 6 shots. Una only new to golf whose first match this was managed to follow her partners direction leading to the 2 holes win.
After five competitive but friendly matches the teams enjoyed refreshments in the sunshine, some enjoying a dip in the Irish Sea before returning to Rosslare Golf Club for dinner.
A most enjoyable evening was had by all and the men who had played their annual Cleek fixture after the ladies’ match joined up for the meal and speeches.
The Fanagan Cup was presented by Cecilia Spain to the acting Captain of UCD alumni, Orna Bacon in the absence of Liz Carton whose President’s prize to the men of Milltown Golf club had clashed with the event. Orna expressed how much the UCD ladies had enjoyed the event.
Cecilia Spain on behalf of DUGS ladies acknowledged two great ladies who had contributed so much, Suzie Fanagan who DUGS were so delighted to have committed to this DUGS annual fixture and Mary Anderson Senior who had supported the Irish members of the Curtis Cup teams, of which Suzie had been a member and developed the Irish Senior ladies .
Aedan Jameson was thanked for his contribution including the DUGS ladies in this annual fixture and for all his help on the day.
