Match Report
Ten DUGS travelled to Rye for the third instalment of our biannual match against the Moles: 54 holes of scratch foursomes across the Jubilee and Old Courses. With fabulous weather and the links playing firm and fast, conditions could hardly have been better.
Our team comprised Match Manager Darragh Coghlan, Ruairi Kennelly, Cian Poland, Eoin Sullivan, Eugene O’Neill, Ian Smith, Mikey Mina-Ronayne, Nick Plunkett-Dillon, Andrew Stokes and Sean Mulcahy. Particular thanks go to Eugene, who cut short a family holiday to join us. Nick adopted a simpler approach but not on purpose. Having mixed up the dates, a Wednesday evening message from me prompted a reply of “Oh shit, I’ll see you tomorrow morning.” Thankfully, he was true to his word.
After two closely contested rounds on Thursday, the teams were level at 5–5. A fabulous dinner followed, with some excellent jokes and plenty of laughter, before Moles captain Steve Seman led our team astray by convincing us that martinis were a good idea.
The evidence of which came on Friday morning, when the Moles won four of the five matches to secure a 9–6 victory. Cian and Eoin provided our sole point, completing an excellent three wins from three for Cian. The Moles are fantastic golfers, but their experience of playing both during and after drinking remains a competitive advantage. Clearly, our preparation requires attention.
Our sincere thanks to the Moles for their exceptional generosity and organisation, particularly Steve Seman and Roger Kelly (although not a Mole) for accommodating four of our team, and to Rye Golf Club for hosting this wonderful 54-hole fixture.
Everyone had a blast. This third meeting further strengthened the friendships between our societies, whose shared values are evident both on the course and long after the golf has finished. It is a thoroughly enjoyable fixture, and one I very much hope will continue long into the future.
