DUGS comprehensively won the Caldwell Quaich at the 3rd attempt. Despite heavy rain forecast for the morning, Baltray ignored the forecast and miraculously remained dry throughout the morning and afternoon foursomes. The Quaich, named in honour of Gavin Caldwell, only the third Irishman to Captain the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews, was presented at dinner by Henry Collier (President, Flat Caps) to Fergus Duddy (Captain, DUGS).

Winter Meeting 2019

DUGS vs Portmarnock Golf Club – Lionel Munn Putter

12 man team, 18 hole 4-ball aggregate

Manager: John Kenny

Munn Putter 2018

The 2018 Munn Putter team, considerably strengthened by the absence on safari of the senior DUGS members, suffered a shock third defeat in a row at the hands of Portmarnock Golf Club.

Early morning bacon rolls and coffee wasn’t enough to fuel a DUGS team against a youthful and ruthless opposition. Early matches were exchanged with PGC steadily building up a holes-up lead thanks to some generally incompetent play from the DUGS. Former bankers, Shanahan and Johnston appeared perplexed, their form of previous years a hazy memory. Brett and Connolly were savaged 6 down by Harnett and O’Brien. Nine down was the final result when Flavin and Murnane lurched in from the links.

No notable or unsporting moments were reported other than Spain’s approach to the 18th which may have set some sort of record for distance from an intended target.

Grace was once again mangled by the Prince of Tweed.

A three course lunch, the first since 2007, was enjoyed by the golfers who rejoiced at the return of the good times. PGC President Harnett sternly noted the absence of DUGS dignitaries and declared himself greatly displeased at the snub to Portmarnock. Match manager Kenny, standing in for the President, Captain, Hon Sec and Hon Treasurer, threw insults at anyone who came into sight and demanded, to loud applause,  the immediate return of the plaque to Munn’s Mounds.

Later, as the pain of defeat eased, Kenny consoled himself with the thought that the defeat would have been much more severe had the DUGS heavyweights been on the team.

Match report:

DUGS assembled on Thursday evening at the Slieve Donard to find a Dermatologists Conference in progress but, notwithstanding 90% of conference attendees being female, DUGS maintained focus on Ledger preparation which, as usual, meant a long dinner followed by more than a few drinks.

Friday morning dawned with DUGS, QUGS, and UCDGS teams arriving at RCD. In a departure from past practice the UCDGS team had the correct number of players with the correct composition of handicaps. (Whether this follows the introduction of penalties for not so doing is a moot point.)

A lovely morning and a beautifully presented RCD links greeted the participants of the 33rd Ledger. There could be no excuses for the sixsomes setting off from 8am. However by lunchtime excuses were needed as QUGS, dropping just 1/2 point in the morning matches, went into an overwhelming lead. DUGS took some little comfort, over a two-hour lunch, in having achieved more than three times the points of UCDGS.

Much fortified the afternoon sixsomes set forth, in more lovely weather, from 2pm. The long lunch clearly agreed with DUGS who staged a thrilling comeback. However QUGS morning lead proved too much to overcome and they emerged worthy winners, with DUGS a close second, and UCDGS a distant last.

There followed a long, very enjoyable, dinner which featured some fine speeches and, of course, the usual jokes. Later the RCD bar witnessed a budding ‘bromance’ as, arm in arm, Messrs (messers) Johnston and McNamara sang together – and this, allied to their earlier good performances, led to some speculation that (assuming future selection) the duo might constitute a ‘dream team’.

Some time later excited DUGS, QUGS, and UCDGS headed for the Slieve Donard in search of dermatologists. But alas, their conference having concluded, no dermatologists were to be found.

Carrickmines 3: DUGS 2

Weather: A dull but warm day with a southerly breeze. Rain threatened but never materialised.

General comments, points of interest: A lovely day and a warm welcome greeted DUGS on their annual visit to Carrickmines. Pre match coffee and sandwiches were much apprecaited. The course was in good conditon despite the recent overseeding of the greens, but local knowledge and good golf got the hosts off to a good start winning the first 3 matches. DUGS managed wins in the remaining very tight matches to make the overall score look more respectable. After an excellent dinner the CGC Captain, Brian O’Loughlin, welcomed the visitors and thanksed them for a competitive match. He admitted, that despite being on the DUGS mailing list, he had never joined and promptly handed over his life membership fee. The DUGS Captain, Matt Minch responded, reminding us that this match goes back to the late 1940’s and naming many of the CGC golfers who were also members of DUGS. He concluded by thanking the catering staff and presented the Trinity Cup to the Captain, congratulating them on their win. Another enjoyable trip to The ‘mines.

DUGS 10 up, Malone Pirates 4 up
Result: DUGS 6 up.

Weather: Beautiful balmy sunny day at PGC.

General comments, points of interest: Course very dry and running hard with good greens. A pleasure to be there. Some extremely good golf played in the first match by both sides with a half a fair result. Conor’s 12 puts on the back 9 sealed the 2nd match and again a ½ a fair result in the 3rd match. A good chip and put on the 18th secured the point for the Pirates in match 4 and a slightly off day for the Pirates’ pair in match 5, but some good golf and dovetailing by DUGS resulted in a hansome win. A putting lesson for Michael Black on the 9th by Philip Halpenny prooved to be a bitter pill to swallow as he went on to sink put after put for a good win. Out thanks to all those who participated especially those DUGS who came in a short notice, James, Denis and Martin. We lamented the loss of David Fleury earlier this year who was a stalworth of this fixture. We suspect that there may be a few grudge matches next year at Malone…. Bring on the challenge.

Captain’s (Matt Minch) Prize

Report – DUGS Captain’s Prize, Milltown GC, 13 July 2018

Matt Minch, DUGS Captain for 2018, hosted his Captain’s Prize on a beautifully sunny afternoon at Milltown Golf Club on Friday 13 July.
A large turn-out of 40 golfers pitted themselves against a course that was fast-running and well protected by some tricky pin placeents so it was no surprise when it was local stalwart, Paddy Spain, who claimed top honours with a magnificent score of 43 points, with best gross going to our most consistent DUG of the last couple of years, Fran Quilty. The full results were as follows:

Winner : Paddy Spain, 43 points
Best gross : Fran Quilty, 33 points
Second : Martin Moroney, 41 points (on back nine)
Third : Brian Tuite, 41 points
Front 9 : Donald Hickey, 20 points
Back 9 : Alan Wolfe, 22 points

After some welcome pre-prandial drinks on the sun-bathed balcony, 29 DUGS sat down to enjoy another sumptuous dinner from the Milltown kitchen, carefully masterminded by the ever-present head-waiter, Peter, and the head barman, Mark. Following a brief moment’s silence in memory of David Fleury, the Latin grace was delivered faultlessly and without notes by Fergus Duddy. The Captain was his usual debonair self in delivering a very entertaining after-dinner speech, including the extension of very special welcomes to his good friend, Clive Davis, who was visiting from Kenya, and to his son, Chris, playing in his first DUGS outing. Paddy Spain’s acceptance speech was acclaimed as the highlight of the evening, especially since it included no jokes that required censoring.
On a day of such fun and camaraderie, it was hardly surprising that a significant number of DUGS headed to the bar after dinner and, indeed, it was difficult to persuade the Captain that, at midnight, his day had, indeed, come to an end and that he was required to go home!!

DUGS v Flat Caps, The Island Golf Club, Friday 20th April 2018

Match Report

DUGS and Flat Caps assembled at The Island just after sunrise when tea/coffee and bacon rolls were served in the Front Lounge. The forecast was for a bright fresh day.

Playing off the medal tees, the links provided a stern test and DUGS trailed 1.5 to 3.5 after the morning foursomes. A hearty lunch gave DUGS a chance to regroup but, despite winning the afternoon foursomes 3 to 2, Flat Caps edged the match 5.5 to 4.5.

Dinner, preceded by the Trinity Grace recited by President Gavin Caldwell, was followed by the customary formalities which culminated in the Caldwell Quaich being presented by Matt Minch (Captain, DUGS) to Henry Collier (President, Flat Caps). The Caldwell Quaich, named in honour of Gavin Caldwell, will be played for annually by DUGS and Flat Caps.

Finally, we called time on what was another great day’s golf and camaraderie between kindred spirits.
